LOVELAND PASS, Colo. -- A skier was partially buried after triggering an avalanche Thursday morning near Loveland Pass.Ethan Greene, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, said one of the center's instructors spotted the slide while driving on U.S. Highway 6 in the mountains. The slide was up to 4 feet deep and 200 feet wide, he said. The wind-slab avalanche cracked and slid from 12,200 feet.
Greene said the avalanche center had issued a low avalanche danger warning, with pockets of moderate concern in the area, for Thursday. But the forecast also stated that wind slabs would be a concern.Greene said the greatest concern was wind slabs on steep slopes. The slide was the 10th human-triggered avalanche in Colorado this ski season that resulted in at least a partial burial.Greene said the skier who triggered this slide was able to self-extricate and got out of the area before rescue crews arrived.
