School Bus Driver Arrested After Boulder Crash

No Students Injured

UPDATED: 10:03 pm MST November 30, 2009

A Boulder school bus driver was jailed, accused of being under the influence of drugs, after the bus he was driving crashed Monday morning, police said.

The bus was carrying 17 students to Boulder High School, but none were hurt.

The crash happened about 7:10 a.m. at 17th Street and Canyon Boulevard.

The driver, Robert Lecy, went off the road and hit a small retaining wall on the northwest corner of the intersection and narrowly missed hitting the home where Jake Breschani and Ryan Kelley were sleeping.

"I heard the bang and he started yelling because he saw it first," said Breschani. "I jumped out of bed and ran out here and saw the bus with a bunch of kids on it. I was shocked."

"It was about 10 feet from my bedroom window. I was shocked. It was a rude awakening," Kelley said.

Robert Lecy, 62, was arrested for investigation of careless driving and driving under the influence of drugs.

"That is not a person that should be in the care of driving our children," said parent Kathleen Sepeda, whose daughter sometimes rides the bus.

"We do everything that we can to make sure all of our drivers are safe and all of our kids are safe all the time," said Bob Young, transportation director for the Boulder Valley School District.

Robert Lecy is accused of being under the influence of drugs while he was driving the school bus.

Young said the district does extensive background checks and tests with all bus drivers, including annual driving record checks, regular driving performance tests and quarterly random drug tests.

"(Lecy) has a clean record, nothing to indicate there could be a problem," said Young.

Young said the district will be doing a thorough review of its policies as the investigation continues.

Boulder police said it will take 10 to 14 days to get toxicology test results.

At this time, it's not clear if Lecy may have been under the influence of prescription drugs or illegal drugs, according to police.

The school district has put Lecy on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.
