UPDATED: 11:46 am MST November 27, 2009

Boulder police are looking for a would-be thief who tried to rip an ATM out of the ground with a U-Haul truck.

Police released surveillance photos of the man in the attempted theft that happened outside the Chase Bank on Gunpark Drive around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers responding to an alarm at the bank found the ATM on its side about 15 to 20 feet from where it had been installed.

"Wires were sticking up from the ground and heavy chain was wrapped around the machine," said police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.

The photos show the man trying to chain the ATM to the back of a U-Haul truck. The truck, which was reported stolen in Boulder County, was recovered a short distance away from the bank on Wednesday afternoon, Huntley said.

No money was taken from the ATM.

Authorities are asking for the public's help in finding the man. Anyone with information is asked to contact Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or 1-800-444-3776. Tips can also be submitted via the Crime Stoppers Web site at crimeshurt.com.
