DENVER -- Federal officials plan to restore migratory bird habitat around a Denver site where uranium and radium were once processed for X-ray equipment and gauges.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Tuesday released a draft plan addressing effects on the South Platte River watershed of contamination in groundwater under the former Shattuck Chemical Co. facility AT 1805 S. Bannock St.

Federal officials have proposed restoring native plants along the river and on Colorado's eastern plains for birds that use the areas.

The Shattuck facility was closed in 1984 and was declared a federal Superfund site. The $33 million cleanup of the site included $250,000 from Shattuck for damages to natural resources. Contributions from private groups and state and local agencies have boosted the funding to $1 million.
