Police: Aspen Woman's Death Was Accidental

Sprinkler Head Caused Fatal Wound, Second Autopsy Shows

POSTED: 4:55 am MST November 24, 2009

The mysterious death of a well-known Aspen woman was likely an accident, according to police.

Cheryl Lurie's body was discovered early in the morning on Nov. 16, in the Pitkin County Library Plaza.

Police at first thought Lurie, 54, died from hypothermia during a walk home the night before. But an autopsy showed she died from internal bleeding caused by a wound to her eye.

On Monday, investigators watched a second autopsy of Lurie and were told a blood-spattered sprinkler head in the plaza was a near-perfect match for her eye injury.

"Based on information obtained by the coroner and pathologists, evidence collected, and interviews conducted as part of the investigation the Aspen Police Department believes that the death of Cheryl Ann Lurie was accidental, despite the curious circumstances," a police department press release stated.

Police believe she slipped and fell onto the sprinkler head which was within 2 feet of her body.

What is still puzzling to police is that her coat and purse were found about 10 to 15 feet away from her body.

"I don’t know that we’ll ever know the answers to some of those questions,” Aspen Police Chief Richard Pryor said Monday night. "From the outset, this has been a curious case that has not led to many obvious answers, although it has turned up some evidentiary trails to lead us to where we are today."

Police are reviewing surveillance video from security cameras from the area to see if Lurie can be seen in any of the video.

The woman had attended a Broncos football party at the Elks Lodge and was last seen walking home.

Lurie was known for her volunteer work in the community.

"She was a great, wonderful woman. She was up here all the time volunteering for whatever needed to be done," Elks Lodge member Steve Saunders told the Aspen Daily News. "She was constantly helping out anybody who was in need. This is a real loss for the community."
