Sprinkler Head Suspected In Aspen Woman's Mystery Death
Cheryl Lurie Died From Internal Bleeding, Autopsy Shows
POSTED: 10:09 am MST November 23, 2009
ASPEN, Colo. -- Aspen investigators plan to meet with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and a pathologist to discuss the mysterious death of a well-known Aspen woman last week. The body of Cheryl Lurie was found the morning of Nov. 16 lying face up beneath spruce trees, behind a bench in the plaza that connects the Pitkin County Library with the County Courthouse. She was last seen the evening of Nov. 15, according to police. Her death was first attributed to hypothermia but a preliminary coroner's report said she died from blunt head trauma -- specifically an eye injury that caused her to bleed to death internally -- and that sent investigators back to the plaza to look for additional evidence.
A detective found a blood-spattered sprinkler head that is suspected of causing Lurie's eye injury. Monday's meeting will help determine if the shape of the sprinkler head matches the injury to Lurie's eye.If the sprinkler matches the injury police still won't know if she fell or was pushed. So far, "there’s not enough evidence to label this case one way or another," Pitkin County Undersheriff Joe DiSalvo told the Aspen Daily News Sunday night. "It’s a very suspicious death."Aspen police are asking anyone who might have seen her on Nov. 15, or have knowledge about her death, to call them at 970-920-5400.
