Suspect In Downtown Denver Attacks Surrenders

Police Say 35 Men, Boys Accused Of Robberies

POSTED: 7:53 am MST November 23, 2009

One of three suspects sought in a roundup of gang members suspected of videotaping robberies and assaults in Denver has turned himself in.

Twenty-six-year-old Torrence McCall is among 35 black men and boys accused of attacking white and Hispanic man in downtown Denver and robbing them. The suspects allegedly stole wallets, iPods and cash and sold videotapes of the crimes as entertainment.

Police said McCall turned himself in at police headquarters Sunday evening.

Two other suspects remained at large. Many of the other 32 suspects were arrested in a sweep on Friday.

A task force of Denver police, the FBI and District Attorney Mitch Morrissey's office said the suspects have been involved in 26 incidents since July. It was not clear why authorities didn't warn the public sooner about the ongoing attacks.

Authorities said small groups of black men and youths tried to knock out white or Latino men by hitting them in the head. They sometimes taunted them with racial insults during the attack, according to investigators.
