Newborn Found Alive In Mich. Dumpster

Baby Put In Plastic Bag

Police said a mother might be facing charges after her newborn baby was found in a Dumpster outside of a collision shop in Garden City, WDIV-TV in Detroit reported.

"It's confusing. It's sad that somebody would just throw a baby in a Dumpster and leave," said Adam Farha, one of the people who found the baby.

The baby was found around 5:30 p.m. Friday in a plastic bag with the umbilical cord still attached.

"When we opened it, (we saw) blood and a cord, and a baby in there was crying," Farha said.

Ronnie Smith also saw the baby in the Dumpster, but didn't realize what he was seeing. He said he thought it was a cat at the bottom of the Dumpster until he saw the plastic bag move. "Then I said, 'Oh no, there it is," he said.

Smith said he then ran inside the collision shop to ask for help.

Witnesses said the baby was blue and bloody.

They carried her inside, wrapped her up and called 911.

"We just kept her warm and I just held her until the ambulance got here," said Erin Leen, who works at the collision shop.

The baby was taken to a hospital.

Police found the mother at a relative's home around 9:30 p.m. Friday.

She was also taken to the hospital.

Police said a receipt left in the bag from a gas station next to the Dumpster helped investigators find the newborn's mother.

The newborn is now in the care of child protective services.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is now considering whether to file charges against the mother.

Michigan has a safe-delivery law that allows a mother to drop off her newborn at a police station, fire station or hospital within 72 hours after birth, no questions asked.
