14-Year-Old Girl Is Season's First Ski Fatality

Haley Rose Gans Dies After Crash At Breckenridge

POSTED: 2:47 pm MST November 20, 2009

A 14-year-old Colorado girl has become the season's first ski fatality in the state.

Breckenridge Ski Resort said the girl was skiing very fast on the Spruce trail, a blue intermediate trail, when she hit a tree.

The ski patrol was notified at 11:48 a.m.

Haley Rose Gans was transported by a Flight For Life medical helicopter to Breckenridge Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson said the cause and manner of death are pending investigation but are related to blunt force trauma of the chest.

The ski resort said Gans was wearing a helmet. Gans was from Colorado Springs and was home schooled, Richardson said.

"Breckenridge Ski Resort, Breckenridge Ski Patrol and the Vail Resorts family extend their deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of the young woman," said a statement issued by the resort.
