Fort Carson Soldier Gets 2 Life Sentences

UPDATED: 12:27 am MST November 20, 2009

A Fort Carson soldier convicted of killing two people with an AK-47 when they were putting up yard sale signs has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.

A judge also sentenced 25-year-old Jomar Falu-Vives to another 140 years on Thursday for wounding a fellow soldier, Army Capt. Zachary A Szody, in another drive-by shooting in Colorado Springs. A jury on Wednesday convicted the Iraq war veteran of first-degree murder and attempted murder after nearly seven hours of deliberation.

Falu-Vives apologized Thursday, saying he wanted his voice heard.

He told the court that he's always been a soldier and is "ready to take the road which you are going to set before me. Sorry."

However, Falu-Vives never explained what prompted the shootings.

Dave Szody, father of Zachary A Szody, said after the sentencing that Falu-Vives "is not a soldier in any army."

Falu-Vives' gun was used in the shootings, but his attorneys had argued that he did not pull the trigger.

Amairany “Mayra” Cervantes, 18, and her sister’s boyfriend, Cesar Ramirez-Ibanez, 20, were killed in the shootings.

"When the Legislature defined 'extreme indifference' they must have had you in mind,” Judge Thomas L. Kennedy told Falu-Vives. "I’ve never seen a killing as senseless as the killings in this case."
