Chicken-Costumed Person Appears At City Council Meeting

Council Was Debating Backyard Chicken Ordinance

Members of the Durango City Council got a surprise Tuesday night when a person walked in wearing a chicken costume.

It happened while the council was discussing the language of a recently passed backyard chicken ordinance, according to the Durango Herald newspaper.

The newspaper said the chicken-costumed person walked in about 8:30 p.m. with a sign, took a few turns, then sat down in the otherwise-empty gallery. The chicken sat there as councilors laughed and tried to continue with business. The Durango Herald said when council went into a scheduled closed session, the chicken approached the dais, crouched, left an egg on the floor and walked out.

"I thought it was hilarious," Councilor Christina Thompson told the paper. "I was laughing so hard my eyes hurt, and my cheeks ... There are just so many other things for us to be serious about, it's good to take a break once in a while."
