Rifle Teen Gets Probation For Pipe Bomb

Police Found Assault Rifle, Drugs In Boy's Home

POSTED: 11:25 am MST November 6, 2009

A teenager from Rifle, Colo., has received probation and community service after pleading guilty to making a pipe bomb.

Ninth Judicial District Judge Denise Lynch sentenced 19-year-old Scott Stricklan to two years' supervised probation and 15 days' community service on Thursday.

Stricklan was arrested in November 2008 when a pipe bomb was discovered in Stricklan's car by workers installing speakers. Police later found an AK-47 assault rifle and drugs in Stricklan's home.

Stricklan's attorney, Tom Silverman, said his client was "doing what young boys do" and simply wanted "to see something go boom." Silverman referred to the pipe bomb as a "firecracker."

"We're not talking nitroglycerin here,” Silverman said. "It's not volatile, it's black powder, you have to light a fuse."

Judge Lynch disagreed, saying she didn't think it was normal behavior for a teen to possess a pipe bomb or an AK-47.
