Boulder Falls Trail Closed Indefinitely

City: Needed Changes Are Too Expensive

It looks like the trail to Boulder Falls will not be reopening any time soon.

The trail to the popular tourist attraction was closed in March after a visitor was injured by a falling rock. According to the city of Boulder's Web site, the falls have been closed indefinitely, due to the danger of continuing rock falls in the area.

Boulder Falls can be seen from Highway 119, about halfway between Boulder and Nederland. However, the trail took visitors to a better view of the scenic waterfall on North Boulder Creek. Tape and signs at the trail entrance warn visitors that the trailis are closed.

Consultants looking at the area recently issued a report with two recommendations: The city could either install a large, well-anchored concrete wall that would have to be flown in with a helicopter; or hire a "scaling" crew to spend a couple of weeks working to dislodge all the rocks that could potentially come loose, according to the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper. The paper reported the first option would be extremely expensive, the second would be only a temporary fix.

"Since we can't reasonably expect that our visitors will be safe there, the only course of action from a visitor safety standpoint is to close it," Jim Reeder, land and visitor services division manager for the Open Space and Mountain Parks Department told the newspaper.
