Police: Soldier Shot Himself To Avoid Afghan Deployment

Earlier Report Said Soldier Was Shot Helping Someone

POSTED: 4:38 am MDT October 29, 2009

A Fort Carson soldier shot himself just outside a Colorado Springs hospital to avoid re-deployment to Afghanistan, police said Thursday.

Robert Murchinson, 26, and his girlfriend, Chasaity Peoples, 28, earlier told police they had pulled over to help a stranded motorist and that Murchinson was shot by the motorist.

Police said the couple went through about six versions of what happened before finally admitting Murchinson shot himself because he didn't want to re-deploy. He had shot himself near Penrose-St. Francis main hospital, police said.

Murchinson is in intensive care with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He is expected to recover.

He and his girlfriend could be charged with false reporting.
