Man Pleads Guilty To DUI Crash That Killed Mom, Baby

Other Driver Cited For DUI; Third Man Charged In Case

POSTED: 1:04 pm MDT October 27, 2009

A 20-year-old Parachute, Colo. man has pleaded guilty to driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a mother and her baby.

Deputy District Attorney Mark Hand said he has not decided yet what length of prison sentence to ask for Derrick Maxfield, who entered his pleas on Monday. He pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, child abuse resulting in death, vehicular assault while DUI and misdemeanor DUI.

The deal calls for Maxfield to serve between 16 and 30 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Maxfield had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit when he crashed a Honda Civic into a pickup in February and killed 21-year-old Shandi Boetel and her 6-month-old daughter, Natalia Casiano.

An arrest affidavit indicated Maxfield was fleeing police and ran several red lights before hitting the pickup.

The driver of the pickup, Luis Casiano, 24, also was injured in the crash. Casiano was later charged with DUI, child abuse and driving under restraint. He is the father of Natalia.

Another man, Jason Carley, 24, pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of providing alcohol to a minor. He allegedly provided Maxfield with alcohol prior to the crash.

Maxfield is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 4.
