PUEBLO, Colo. -- The three people running for homecoming queen at CSU-Pueblo are a gay male student, a 60-year-old woman and a female sophomore who looks like a more traditional candidate.

The election runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.

The candidates are getting a lot of attention because CSU-Pueblo said it's never had a male student or a senior citizen run for Homecoming Queen.

Openly gay senior DeMarques Taylor is a political science/sociology major running to promote diversity and acceptance. He never went to his homecoming in high school. "I thought this would be the right way to have a positive effect on the students and maybe change their minds a bit," Taylor said. Taylor's posters are getting a lot of attention because they say "Vote the Queen."

CSU-Pueblo doesn't have any rules or regulations on gender requirements for candidates, according to KOAA-TV.

Taylor says if he wins, he won't wear a dress to the game Saturday night, but he will wear the crown.

Juanita Whitaker, 60, is running against Taylor. On the Web site for the candidates, Whitaker said, "I feel that I am best to represent CSU-Pueblo because according to statistics, the largest growing segment of the population are senior citizens. I feel that CSU-Pueblo should embrace the future and elect a homecoming queen that reflects both the present and the future.”

She said she ran for homecoming Queen because she wants people to say, "if she can do it, I can do it."

The third candidate, Jazmine Wells, calls herself a dedicated, active student that can relate to the rest of the student body.
