'Balloon Boy' Halloween Costumes Selling On Internet

Canadian Company Capitalizes On Colorado Story

POSTED: 10:59 am MDT October 21, 2009

A Canadian company has begun selling a "Balloon Boy Halloween Kit" to capitalize on the plight of the Colorado family at the center of several investigations.

Plantraco Microflight introduced the Halloween costume kit Tuesday, selling online for $19.99.

The kit is a tongue-in-cheek representation of the Heene family of Fort Collins, Colo., and their son, who they claimed had been carried away in a flying-saucer last week. The story, which investigators said was a hoax, received worldwide coverage.

The "kit" actually contains only a 38-inch mylar balloon and small gondola that is attached underneath. Customers must supply helium for the balloon, string to hold it and the box that a person wears.

The Plantraco Web site description reads, "Now you, too, can enjoy all the media attention you want with Plantraco's Balloon Boy Hoax kit ... flying saucers and hot air balloon hoaxes are famous these days; get on the bandwagon for trick-or-treat Halloween fun and loads of laughs for everyone!"

Some sellers on eBay are also trying to capitalize on the story. One seller is selling a "build-it-yourself" balloon boy costume. The "kit" contains a roll of mylar, and nothing else.
