Auto Theft In Progress Turns Out To Be Bear

Homeowner Calls 911 After Hearing Car Alarm, Moving Light In Car

POSTED: 11:07 am MDT October 15, 2009

Teller County deputies were called to the Colorado Mountain Estates subdivision Wednesday, after a report of possible auto theft in progress and were surprised by what they found.

Sheriff Kevin M. Dougherty said the homeowners reported a light moving around inside their car and said the car alarm was sounding.

When deputies arrived, they found a black bear inside the car, trashing it in an effort to escape.

One of the deputies opened the car door to let the bear escape.

Deputies found the bear had somehow pushed the handle of the car door and opened the door. While it was in the car, the door closed, trapping the animal inside.

Further investigation revealed the bear ripped out the ceiling of the car and dome light and electric wire wrapped around him, giving the impression of a light moving around in the car.
