AURORA, Colo. -- Several members of the Hinkley High School boys soccer team are being disciplined for a sexual hazing incident that reportedly occurred last month. The "inappropriate physical behavior" occurred on Sept. 25 between members of the varsity and junior varsity soccer teams, according to the Aurora Public School District. The incident occurred on the school bus while the teams were returning from a game at Arvada West High School in Jefferson County, according to Denver police, which is investigating the incident."We're investigating this incident as a misdemeanor sex crime and misdemeanor harassment," said Denver police spokeswoman Loretta Beauvais.
According to Hinkley students who had heard about what happened through friends on the bus, the incident involved "teabagging," or placing one's genitals on another person's face. It's not clear how many boys were involved.Aurora Public Schools refused to discuss specific disciplinary action, but said the discipline against the students will include expulsions and suspensions. The school employees responsible for supervising the students involved are also being disciplined, Aurora Public Schools spokeswoman Paula Hans said. That disciplinary action may include reprimand, suspension or termination. There are three coaches for the boys soccer team -- a head coach and two assistant coaches. Two of the coaches who were supervising students on the bus will be disciplined but their identities have not been disclosed."We have zero tolerance for inappropriate physical behavior and harassment of any kind," said Superintendent John Barry.Even though the incident occurred on Sept. 25, the school didn't start investigating until five days later, when a staff member who heard a tip about what happened on the school bus and reported it to authorities, Barry said.Hinkley High School and Aurora Public Schools staff members started interviewing students who may have been involved and the adults who were supervising them."We immediately reviewed our supervision procedures and made changes to our event supervision practices. We have met with all coaches to discuss appropriate student conduct and to reiterate our policies. Coaches are also reviewing appropriate student conduct and our policies during athletic practices with students," Barry said. The school also reported the incident to Denver police because the incident occurred while the team was passing through Denver on the way to Hinkley High School. The school said it has counseling team available for students who need it.The district posted an online statement and made automated phone calls to parents of Hinkley High School, alerting them to the situation.
