Scott Lee Kimball's Statement At Sentencing

Statement Read By Kimball Family Spokesman Ed Coet

POSTED: 12:29 pm MDT October 9, 2009
UPDATED: 12:35 pm MDT October 9, 2009

Good afternoon, my name is Ed Coet. I am the family spokesperson for Scott Lee Kimball, his mother Barbra Kimball, and his brother Brett Kimball. Scott asked me to share the following statement, provided in substance, with you now.

Scott said:

I, Scott Lee Kimball, have pleaded guilty to two counts of murder in the 2nd degree. This was part of plea bargain arrangement. I am sorry for my crimes. I accept full responsibility for my role in these murders. I deserve to be held accountable and punished for my crimes. However, I did not act alone.

I was part of a very intricate state, regional and international organized crime enterprise that involved millions of dollars. I intend to get my story out, through my family spokesperson, Ed Coet, while protecting select individuals. I am not a snitch.

Myself and two other inmates thought up the scheme to con the FBI in to releasing me from prison to act as an FBI informant. The scheme included my involvement in a fake "hit" of an individual that the FBI bought in to. The idea was that the FBI would contact and then recruit me to be an informant for them. We were amazed at how easily our plan worked on the FBI. They were completely conned. They released me early as planned.

Special Agent Charles Schlaft became my FBI handler. I gave him only useless information but he was able to direct me deep in to a criminal underworld that was exciting and intriguing but turned out to be very dangerous and deadly. However, I was free to oversee our own profitable criminal enterprise while under his direct supervision. Unfortunately, the FBI got me in way over my head. If anybody wants to know why I did what I did, my answer is that I always did it for the money, huge amounts of money.

I also admit to being a member of the "Montana Freeman," a separatist organization.

I offer my heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims and especially my own family who are also victims in all of this. I want my family to know that I love them. I am very sorry for all their suffering and the suffering of the other murdered victim's families.

I do want the families of all the victims, and the public, to know that although I must be held accountable for my crimes, none of this could have occurred, and the victims would not have been killed had the FBI not driven me in to the extremely dangerous underworld in which both I and the murdered victims found ourselves. Of course, all of us make our own choices but without circumstance some choices cannot be made.
