DENVER -- Investigators are looking into a deadly shooting involving several police officers -- the second fatal officer-involved shooting in Denver in the last four days.
The shooting happened near 12th and Lincoln in downtown Denver around 3:30 a.m. after a brief police chase.
The incident began when a 7-Eleven clerk several blocks away called police and said that a customer had pointed a laser gun at him.
When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect rammed into a patrol car and sped off, police said.
The officer inside was not injured.
Other officers began a brief pursuit and caught up with the suspect at 12th and Lincoln, where his sport utility vehicle had become stuck on the side of the road after hitting a tree and a fire hydrant.
When officers got out of their cars and tried to approach the suspect, he pulled a weapon and pointed it at them, Denver police detective John White said.
The officers then opened fire. The suspect was hit several times and died.
It was not known how many shots police fired but the video 7NEWS obtained from the scene showed that the suspect's Jeep Cherokee was bullet-riddled and that investigators were placing dozens of evidence markers near bullet casings on the ground.
It was not clear whether the weapon that was pointed at police officers was a laser pointer or a gun.
The identity of the officers involved and the suspect have not been released.
The other fatal shooting this week took place on Tuesday, when Denver officers fired on a man armed with a knife. That suspect died in front of his home.
