Peace Sign Graffiti Has Neighbors Fighting Mad

Dozens Of Symbols Appear All Over Denver, Police Investigating

What is supposed to be a symbol of peace is making people all over Denver fighting mad.

Vandals spray painted so many peace signs on Denver homes, businesses and bridges in recent days that neighbors think it must have been a coordinated effort, and they want to know who’s behind it.

"There's tons of them. They're everywhere," said Jesse Dawson, who works in a business that was tagged.

The Capitol Hill neighborhood was hit hardest.

Dozens of peace signs appear along 13th Avenue between Sherman Street and Williams Street.

"There is a line between street art and straight-up vandalism," said Stephanie Shearer, owner of Pandora’s Jewelry, while she was cleaning the spray paint off her neighbor’s business front. "When you hit independent businesses owned by 60-year-old ladies, that's vandalism."

Block after block, the symbols appear on almost every building around hers.

The vandals even tagged Steven Wiskow’s historic home at 11th Avenue and Grant Street.

"It's weird because you would think that someone would see it, someone driving by, because it's a high-traffic area," he said.

While everyone now sees the results, apparently no one saw the crime in action.

Denver police said they don’t have any suspects and didn’t send a car to check on it until Sunday afternoon at about 2:00 p.m.

For those left cleaning up the mess, the “message” doesn’t make any difference.

"I'm a bleeding-heart liberal. I like peace, But I don't like to see peace signs all over my neighbor's property," said Shearer.

The City of Denver will remove graffiti on public and private property if residents call 311 and fill out a request form.

It’s not clear if any surveillance cameras caught the vandals in action, but Denver police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
