ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. -- A 70-year-old Adams County woman remained in critical condition Monday after she was attacked by two dogs Friday night.

Neighbors said Mary Garcia had just stepped outside her home, on the 6300 block of Julian Street, to lock her car door. That's when the two dogs escaped through a hole in a neighbor's fence and charged at Garcia, witnesses said. The dogs mauled her arms and legs.

"They weren't bites. They were more like a mauling, a ripping," said Jacob Olivas, Garcia's grandson.

Olivas said the worst came when Garcia suffered a heart attack, brought on by the stress of the situation.

Neighbors were able to fight off the dogs with a broom and a wooden board, while Garcia's grandson looked on helplessly.

"Her 2-and-a-half or 3-year-old grandson stood in the door and was crying and screaming, 'The dogs ate grandma,'" said neighbor Richard Wold.

Brutus is a Mastiff-Pit Bull mix. Roxy is a Boxer mix. They have since been impounded at the Adams County Animal Shelter in Commerce City. Garcia's family members were told the dogs will be euthanized.

"I'm not angry at the dogs, maybe the owner. He should be responsible, make sure his yard's secure if he's going to own these animals," Olivas said.

However, he wouldn't go as far as to say pit bulls should be banned altogether. Right now, pit bulls are legal in unincorporated parts of Adams County.

Neighbors said this was not the first time the dogs have gotten out out.

"They came across the street two months ago and my grandkids were playing. I grabbed a rock and hollered at the dogs and they went back," said Wold.

The dogs' owner was not home when 7NEWS knocked on the door Sunday. Olivas said his family plans to take the owner to court.

In the meantime, they'll be staying by Garcia's side and continuing to pray she'll make a full recovery.

"She did try to open her eyes and she's moving a little bit. So, those are all really good signs from what doctors tell us," said Olivas.
