HYGIENE, Colo. -- Maybe winning the lottery is rocket science after all. A group of Ball Aerospace workers will share a $1 million prize from last weekend's Powerball drawing. The Colorado Lottery said Wednesday that ten aerospace workers bought the winning ticket. After claiming the winnings, Davis delivered checks to his co-workers at the office. Each received nearly $79,000 after taxes.
"I can’t tell you how happy they were," said Davis, who plans to save his windfall.Jeff Davis, a Ball aerospace technician, bought the winning ticket for the group at the Country Corner Store in Hygiene west of Longmont, not far from his home.Davis said each member of the group pitches in $4 for tickets every time the overall jackpot hits $90 million. The group has been buying tickets collectively for about six months, but the win still took everyone by surprise. They are the second group of Ball workers to win a major prize on Powerball this year. Davis' group works at Ball's facility in Boulder. In June, Pat Weber and Terry Hutson, co-workers at Ball's plant in Broomfield, won $200,000 playing Powerball. The winning numbers were 18, 20, 34, 36 and 39, and the Powerball number was 19.The workers won the windfall by matching five numbers in the Powerball drawing and choosing the Power Play option for an extra $1. Players who match five numbers in the Powerball drawing usually win a $200,000 prize, but selecting the Power Play option (for an extra $1) automatically multiplies their winnings by five.Davis said the pool will continue despite the big win."We're going to hit the big one," said Davis. "Lightning strikes twice."
