Boulder Canyon Climber Dies After Fall

UPDATED: 3:23 pm MDT September 18, 2009

A 41-year-old climber from Denver died after falling in Boulder Canyon Thursday morning.

A spokeswoman with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said emergency crews were alerted at 11:30 a.m. of an accident in the canyon. Jeffery John Brown was climbing with a partner on Cob Rock, on the south side of the canyon, when he took a serious fall while being belayed, sheriff's office spokeswoman Sue Cullen said.

He was unconscious when rescuers arrived.

Rescuers performed a technical evacuation and Brown was flown out of the canyon on a medical helicopter. He died en route to the hospital.

The Rocky Mountain Rescue group is re-climbing the route -- Empor Route on the north face-- to determine what happened. The pair was using rope and technical gear but neither was wearing a helmet, Cullen said.
