Awakened By Dog, 3 Escape Greeley House Fire

Damage Estimated At $100,000

A mother and her two children escaped their burning Greeley home through windows Tuesday morning.

The fire was reported at 5:16 a.m. at 3349 2nd St. and the first arriving fire crews reported flames and smoke shooting from the modular home.

Amanda Watkins said she had been awaked by the family dog, Whisper, which also escaped.

"He knew something was wrong, and he was trying to let me know," she said. "He was persitent, too. He kept whining and crying and I kept going 'oh, I want to sleep,' but then he got his paws on the bed and started licking my face."

Watkins said her 4-year-old son, Alex, was sleeping in the room with her and they were able to get out a bedroom window.

She then went around to the other side of the home, broke out a window and got her 6-year-old daughter Ariana.

The three were transported to North Colorado Medical Center where they were treated for possible smoke inhalation.

Watkins said she is 30 weeks pregnant, but that both she and the baby are fine.

"It's ending as a happy day for us," she said. "If we hadn't had the dog, I think we probably would have died in that fire... We're very lucky today."

The interior of the home sustained an estimated $100,000 fire, smoke and water damage and was deemed unsafe to occupy.

A total three engine companies, a ladder company and rescue company were sent to the fire. In all, 17 fire personnel were involved in fighting the blaze.
