BOULDER, Colo. -- Boulder police are telling customers of two University Hill businesses to check their credit card statements, after burglars took off with hundreds of credit card receipts and tax documents.Burglars broke into Jones General Store and The Root sometime early Friday morning.”They made a mess is what they did,” said Michael Mathis, owner of The Root, a hip-hop shop and nightclub. ”They took these fire extinguishers and lit them off in the club so that there’s a fine powder throughout the club.”
He said they spray-painted the floor and singed two couches with something. He soon discovered several boxes of tax documents and receipts had disappeared. In the same building, Boulder police believe the same burglars broke into Jones General Store and also took a bag of credit card receipts.“Which is of some concern to us because some of those records may well contain people’s personal information and credit card information,” said Sarah Huntley, spokeswoman for the Boulder Police Department. But the owners of both stores said that other than customers’ names, the only information on a receipt is the credit card’s last four digits.”It did seem kind of amateur. They didn’t steal anything except for receipts that aren’t going to be able to be used for identity theft,” said Mathis.Still police said they want to spread the word so customers will know to watch for any sign of suspicious activity.
