FAIRPLAY, Colo. -- The sentencing of two teens found guilty of stating the Snaking Fire near Bailey, Colo., was rescheduled Monday.
Tyler Hancock and Eric Alderfer, both 15, were found guilty of arson last month for starting the Snaking Fire in April 2002. They were scheduled to be sentenced Monday, but the judge rescheduled the sentencing until April 29.
Prosecutors said the teens were smoking cigarettes with a buddy on the mountainside behind Platte Canyon High School.More than 1,000 people in the Bailey area were forced from their homes as the fire torched 2,600 acres. No homes were destroyed, but the cost of firefighting alone was estimated at $2.4 million.The teens face five felony and misdemeanor convictions.
