DENVER -- A presidential speech encouraging children to do their best in school is instead creating controversy among school districts and parents. At issue: will there be a hidden political agenda in the speech? Douglas County's Pine Lane primary and intermediate schools won't be carrying the president's address. While the school's assistant principal wouldn't comment about the reasons behind the decision, an e-mail to parents stated, "We believe there will be other opportunities for viewing of this speech should you feel you'd like your children to hear this message."
Many large districts came out with their policies about carrying the address on Thursday.Aurora, Cherry Creek and Boulder Valley schools will leave it up to individual principals and teachers and give parents a chance to opt out their kids. However, Boulder Valley's spokesman said if parents decide to keep their kids home, it will be an excused absence, even though the school will provide alternate activities for students who are opted out.Meanwhile, other educators said it is a shame the moment has become so politicized. At Lakewood High School, the address will be broadcast in every classroom."I guess I don't have that much fear that we can't have an honest dialogue, and if it does go down the road that's too political, our kids will know that," said Ron Castagna, principal at Lakewood High School. "If he indoctrinates our children to work harder, set educational goals, take responsibility for their learning, more power to him."
