Escapee Captured After High-Speed Mountain Chase

Griffith Jones Apprehended In Park County

POSTED: 1:38 pm MDT September 3, 2009

A Denver escapee faces numerous felony charges after authorities said he assaulted a woman and led deputies on a high-speed chase over a winding mountain pass before his vehicle was disabled with tire spikes.

The incident began early Thursday when Chaffee County deputies were dispatched to the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida, Colo., on a report of domestic violence. They interviewed a woman who said Griffith Jones, 37, of Denver, hit her several times during an argument while they were driving from Denver.

The woman also said Jones held her against her will.

Officers, armed with a description of the Chevy Suburban, spotted the SUV going north on U.S. Highway 285 near Trout Creek Pass at 7:14 a.m. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and a pursuit ensued when it didn't pull over.

Speeds reached 105 mph over Trout Creek Pass and spike strips were put out in Park County, officials said. The strips disabled the vehicle's tires and authorities said Jones fled on foot about 10 miles southwest of Fairplay but was taken into custody a short time later.

Deputies determined the 1996 Chevy Suburban Jones was driving was stolen in Denver on Monday and Jones was an escapee from a halfway house belonging to Colorado Department of Corrections.

Chaffee County authorities said Jones faces charges of assault, false imprisonment, vehicle theft, felony eluding, resisting arrest, driving under revocation, reckless driving and warrant for escape.
