Bare-Bottom Rock Climber Statue Causes Stir

Statue Sits In Silt's Roundabout

At least one critic in the western Colorado town of Silt said a new sculpture of a bare-bottom rock climber is exposing the public to a little too much art.

The statue shows the backside of a naked climber of undetermined gender scaling a cliff. The sculpture sits downtown, in a roundabout on Main Street and the Interstate 70 overpass.

Forrest Jacobs said he complained to town officials that the sculpture is inappropriate but he said he got little response.

Mayor Dave Moore told the Glenwood Springs Post Independent he's sympathetic to Jacobs' argument but adds that the statue is an artist's rendition.

The sculptor, Blaine Peters, said critics are seeing only what they want to see. He calls the climber "a human in the rawest form climbing a rock."

Jacobs said he was most bothered by the statue's crack and added that a prior rendition of the sculpture, before it was built, only showed a man on the wall.

"There was no crack involved," Jacobs insisted. "He just put that in and now it stands out."

The sculptor said the model of the sculpture, crack and all, was approved by the town board.

On Monday, someone covered the climber's derriere with a cloth, making it look like boxer shorts. Town workers took it down.

"There will be a possible investigation as to who put them there," Moore told the newspaper. "It's vandalism. It's defacing public property -- there are laws attached to this."
