Bear Killed After Scratching Aspen Woman

DOW Puts Bear Down After Patio Encounter

POSTED: 7:40 am MDT September 1, 2009

A young bear that scratched an Aspen woman while she was napping on her patio was euthanized Monday.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife found the bear in an aspen tree in the woman's back yard and used a tranquilizer dart to subdue it.

The woman suffered a cut on her left shin but did not require medical attention.

"We are not characterizing this as an attack, but it was in a situation where a person was injured by a bear, and we draw the line at that, " DOW spokesman Randy Hampton told the Aspen Daily News.

The bear was a sow weighing about 100 pounds and was about 2 years old.

Bears have been especially troublesome in the Aspen area this year as the animals feed continuously in preparation for hibernation.

There were at least 225 bear calls to Aspen police in August, including 98 between Aug. 21 and Aug. 28, according to the department. Nine bears have been put down this year by the Division of Wildlife in the Aspen area, 25 statewide.
