Man Explains Threat To Kill Horses

Owner Says He Is In Land Dispute With Weld County

A Weld County man seeking "riflemen-executioners" to kill 24 of his horses admits it's not his first choice when it comes to resolving a land dispute with the county.

A flier sent out last week announced a public execution at high noon on Sept. 5 to save the horses on his property from slaughter.

"I am probably the most hated man in Colorado, if not the nation," said Trenton Parker.

When pressed, Parker said it was extreme but said attempts to sell the stallions have been unsuccessful. He said they are "hot-blooded" Arabians who require an experienced horse handler.

Parker is concerned they will be sold at auction when he is sent to jail for 90 days following a failure to clean-up the 44 acres he helps manage.

Parker is not the owner of the property but Weld County zoning laws make it the responsibility of the property owner, occupant and/or user of the property to maintain it.

Parker said he sold his interests and agreed to take care of the property and despite notices from the county to clean-up the machinery and trailers housed there -- he can't afford to do it.

"Better to shoot our horses on this ground and bury them than to have these beautiful creatures undergo a Mexico slaughterhouse," said Parker.

Parker can't shoot the horses himself because he said he is a convicted felon and can't carry a gun.

Parker said the execution-style shooting is still a possibility but said the media coverage has brought the issue to the attention of national organizations and volunteers who were working with him to find homes for the stallions.

"I got you here didn't I? The horses are still alive, aren't they? There is food over there and there is public awareness going on," said Parker.
