Bear Trashes New Car In Vail

Man Finds Bear Going Crazy In Car

POSTED: 11:59 am MDT August 25, 2009

A Vail resident said his dog started barking Sunday evening and he went outside to find his car rocking back and forth and the windows steamed up.

From there, it gets weird.

Jeff Leistad told the Vail Daily News that he opened the rear passenger side door of his brand new Subaru Forester and came face-to-face with a large black bear.

He said the bear couldn't get out of the car and was "freaking out and going crazy."

Police arrived and opened the door with caution tape, rigged from 30 feet away. The bear was shot with a pepper ball gun to discourage it from approaching humans before it wandered off.

That's when Leistad saw the damage to his new car.

The bear shredded the steering wheel, deployed the air bags and defecated on his passenger seat.

Leistad said he just bought the car in January.

Sgt. Bill Clausen told the Vail Daily that police have been urging people to lock their cars because the bear has learned how to open car doors.
