UPDATED: 1:47 pm MDT August 19, 2009

A Boulder County man, taking apart an assault-type rifle, apparently shot himself in the head Tuesday night.

According to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, the 57-year-old man was working in his garage in Coal Creek Canyon when the AK-47 discharged. The man's wife was in the home and called for help.

Emergency units responded to the home at 25 Crescent Lake Road at 8:40 p.m. and the man was airlifted to a Denver hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"It appears he was disassembling it and he either dropped the rifle or hit it on something," Sgt. Rick Brough said.

There were no indications of foul play.
