BOULDER, Colo. -- The owners of an online biscotti store found out their newest test flavor is popular with at least one bear.Wally and Sharon Friedlander, founders of Wally Biscotti, baked a new flavor Wednesday and left the cookies on the counter of their home. They left home, but when they returned they found a window damaged, the trays disturbed, bear scat -- and a crumbly biscotti mess everywhere, according to the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper.Wildlife officials told the newspaper bears can smell food from up to 3 miles away.
Last month, a bear broke into the vacation rental where former 7NEWS anchor Katie Trexler was staying with family in Estes Park. The bear ate Trexler's chocolate chip cookies that were on a counter.Eagle County officials sent out a news release Thursday urging residents not to leave any wildlife attractants where a bear can gain access to them, including trash cans with food remains, grills and bird feeders.Officials warned that once a bear becomes accustomed to feeding on trash, it will continue to come back for more and may attempt to enter a residence with open windows or doors. If Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) officials are unable to successfully relocate a problem bear, or if a bear enters a home, it will be euthanized.
