DENVER -- As Colorado Rockies baseball fans made their way to Coors Field for Friday night's game against the Chicago Cubs they saw a lot more cops than normal near the main bus station. A dozen members of the Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) team were out in force. They walked the streets and some of them worked with explosive sniffing dogs. The unit is staffed by members from the Transportation Security Administration, Denver police and Regional Transportation District security forces. They don't announce ahead of time where they are going to be but when they show up they are not shy about it.
On Friday, they fanned out near Coors Field. There was no threat. This was random stop by the unit, which has now conducted 150 operations in the Denver area since the start of the year."We want to make sure that everyone is safe," said Denver Commander Deborah Dilley. The nationwide unit was created by the TSA after the terrorist attacks in Madrid, Spain that killed almost 200 people in 2004.Security experts realize they can't be everywhere all the time and they believe the threat of random deterrence can make a difference."We first showed up at the Democratic National Convention and have been making random appearances ever since," said TSA officer Robert Selby.
