Health Department Warns Public To Cook Ground Beef

Second Outbreak Still Concerning Scientists

The Colorado Department of Health is warning the public to either avoid eating or thoroughly cook ground beef to avoid illness.

The department reports 21 cases of salmonella have broken out in the state. Most of the people became sick in the end of June or the beginning of July, said Mark Salley, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Health.

King Soopers grocery stores issued a recall of nearly half a million pounds of ground beef due to the risk of salmonella. Health officials said this strain of salmonella was resistant to antibiotics.

This is the second salmonella outbreak the health department has investigated this month. Both of the outbreaks have been linked to ground beef.

Further investigation to the source of the meat in the latest outbreak is ongoing, Salley said.
