Body Found In Lake During Dragon Boat Festival

Police Say No Foul Play Suspected

While thousands were out enjoying the Dragon Boat Festival at Sloan's Lake on Sunday, someone spotted a body in the water.

Denver police are waiting on an autopsy and don't have much information about the person.

Investigators said the body is that of a man and his death doesn't appear to be connected to the festival. The man's body was spotted at about 1 p.m. on the side of Sloan's Lake -- not the side where the festivities were occuring.

The man's identity and cause of death won't be released until the coroner has completed an autopsy. It's not known how long the body has been in the water, but it must not have been there too long, otherwise it would have been spotted on Saturday, the first day of the festival, police said.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said no foul play is suspected.

"The deceased is believed to be transient/homeless," Jackson said.

Despite the discovery of the body and threat of rain at times, there was no effect on the popular summertime festival, which was attended by more than 100,000 people.

Festival goers sampled everything from great food to the colorful arts. The dragon boat races were the most popular draw with about 1,000 paddlers competing.
