Bear Burglar Keeps Coming Back

Boulder Residents Say Bear Broke Into Home

For the third time in four days, a bear has broken into a Boulder County home in search of food.

The most recent incident happened Saturday night in the Pine Brooke Hills subdivision, just west of Boulder.

"We heard some bottles crashing," said Hillary Grady, the homeowner. "My husband came back into the bedroom and said we have a bear in the house. It is not something you think you have to deal with on a daily basis -- maybe a robber, but a bear in your house, in your kitchen is a little scary. We were a little shaken up."

The bear tore a screen off an open window in the kitchen to get in. Grady thinks the bear was after fresh fruit they had on their counter. This was the second time a bear broke into this particular home, deputies said.

Deputies found the bear near the home and used beanbag munitions to force it out of the neighborhood.

"It serves as a reminder to the bear that being around people is not such a good thing," said Sgt. Mike Dimond, of the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. "If it gets hit in the rear end with a stinging shot, maybe that will prevent it from coming back in the future."

The Division of Wildlife said several homes have been broken into by bears this season.

"We know there are several bears in the area," said Kristin Cannon, of the DOW. "We don't know if all the house break-ins are due to one bear or multiple bears."

Cannon said this year the bears have plenty of food because of all the wet weather, so she is unsure why they are having these problems.
