Aurora Lays Off 70 Employees

Library System Most Impacted By Cuts

POSTED: 10:55 am MDT July 24, 2009
UPDATED: 6:19 pm MDT July 24, 2009

The city of Aurora will lay off 70 full- and part-time employees by the end of the year, most from the public library system.

A city spokeswoman said the workers will be let go on Dec. 31. Aurora started alerting the workers in those positions last week.

Forty of the 70 employees work in the library system. Four of the city's seven library branches could also be closed.

However, a ballot measure relating to the funding of libraries is up for vote in November. If that bond measuer passes, then a lot of these problems could be alleviated and jobs could be saved, a city spokeswoman said.

The city is looking at an $8 million budget shortfall for 2010.

The cuts could provide savings of $3.3 million a year.

The public works department will also be impacted by the cuts. Aurora's public safety department, including police and fire services, will not be affected.
