DENVER -- A registered nurse at Centura Health's St. Anthony Central Hospital has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of drugs.Jillian Fischer, 43, was arrested on July 16 and posted a $3,000 bond, according to public records obtained by 7NEWS. Her arrest affidavit indicates she was arrested on six counts of obtaining controlled substances by fraud and deceit.According to the affidavit, Fischer was a nurse in St. Anthony's neuro/trauma unit. The hospital noticed discrepancies in drug records on June 8 and suspected thefts. An internal audit for a five-day period from May 24 to June 6 allegedly showed Fischer had diverted medications that were intended for patients.
The hospital confronted Fischer on June 9 and said she admitted she had been taking Dilaudid for six months. She was terminated at that point, hospital officials said.Several nurses who worked with her said she called them after her firing and admitted she was addicted to Dilaudid. The hospital then conducted a detailed audit and found that "nurse Fischer had divered Dilaudid, Fentanyl, Vicodin, Ativan, morphine and Valium during the five days between May 24 and June 6.""At this time in the investigation, there is no indication that patients were deprived of pain medication," the arrest affidavit stated.Formal charges have not been filed. That determination will be made by the Denver District Attorney's Office. On Thursday a surgical technician at a different Denver hospital was indicted by a federal grand jury on 42 felony counts of tampering with a consumer product and obtaining a controlled substance by deceit. The grand jury indicted Kristen Diane Parker in connection with the theft of drugs from Rose Medical Center. The indictment alleges Parker took syringes containing a powerful painkiller, injected herself, and placed saline in the syringes which were then used on patients.Parker has hepatitis C and 19 patients at Rose have now developed hepatitis C, according to the federal indictment. On Friday, the Colorado Department of Health said a patient at Audubon Surgery Center in Colorado Springs may have also contracted the blood-borne disease from Parker.
