Mom Who Left Kids In Care Of Abusive Family Pleads Guilty

Karen Stillman Pleads Guilty To Attempted Child Abuse

POSTED: 7:03 pm MDT July 23, 2009

A mother who left her son and daughter in the care of another family for several years, even though she knew they were being sexually abused, pleaded guilty Thursday in connection to the case.

Karen Stillman, 58, pleaded guilty to attempted child abuse with serious bodily injury.

She faces up to 16 years in prison when she appears for sentencing on Sept. 18.

The Denver district attorney's office said the alleged victims, now in their 20s, reported the abuse in 2008, after they moved to Kansas. They said the abuse began in the mid-1990s.

Members of the family accused of the abuse also appeared in Denver District Court Thursday, pleading not guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault on a child.

Eric Torrez, 47; Linda Torrez , 46; and their 23-year-old son Patrick Torrez are scheduled for trial on Jan. 4.
