Colorado wildlife managers say someone illegally shot and killed a bear in a downtown Steamboat Springs alley.

Jim Haskins of the Colorado Division of Wildlife said officers are looking for the shooter and are treating the incident as a crime.

Haskins said the 200- to 300-pound adult male bear was rooting through trash Monday night when it was shot in the head.

"It’s not like a situation where someone was protecting human life or property or anything like that," he told the Steamboat Pilot and Today.
