Patrol: Driver Swerved To Avoid Hitting Deer, Struck Oncoming Car

POSTED: 1:16 pm MDT July 20, 2009

Four Colorado Springs residents have died in a head-on collision in Sublette County in western Wyoming.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol reports the driver of a northbound GMC Suburban swerved to try to avoid hitting a deer at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 191, about 1½ miles south of Boulder.

After hitting the deer, the Suburban went into the southbound lane and collided with a 2005 Acura.

Both people in the Acura died at the scene. The patrol identified them as 68-year-old Edward J. Rudolph, the driver, and passenger 66-year-old Gwen M. Rudolph, of Colorado Springs.

The driver of the Suburban, 52-year-old Daniel J. Wahlen of Colorado Springs, also died at the scene. His passenger, 47-year-old Dani G. Elenga, died as she was being transported by helicopter to an Idaho hospital.

Boulder is north of Rock Springs, Wyo., and west of Lander.
