ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A dog-fight of sorts is playing out in Englewood. It has to do with whether dogs should be allowed at parks off leash. This debate however doesn’t just include Englewood residents.Englewood has five off-leash dog parks. Jason Park is one of them.Dog owners from as far away as Aurora and Thornton bring their dogs to Jason Park.
“She loves it,” said Sheila Carter, who brings her dog Dusty to the park every day. “It's good for her, it keeps her in shape.”They both love the freedom of being off leash and the grass -- two things the nearby dog park doesn’t offer.“Dusty gets too dusty over there and it is just terrible,” said Carter. Some families who use the park, however think the dogs off leash are terrible.“We had an incident where a dog has run across the playground, growling, barking at us and, the dog owner is chasing and said, 'Don't worry the dog won't bite,' but what do you do,” said Tracy Jones.Jones and her mother Martha Griego said dogs off leash do not mix with children. The two said dogs should only be allowed at the parks under one condition.“I think dogs have to be on leash,” said Jones.Englewood Unleashed however, which represents 250 families, said responsible dog owners should not be punished because of the few that are bad.“(The members) appreciate their privileges and are responsible owners,” said Kim Love, president of Englewood Unleashed. “They pick up after their dog and make sure their dogs don't go in playground, in the wrong areas.” Of the organizations 250 members, Love said 40 percent are Englewood residents. Almost all of its members however, no matter what city they live in signed a petition in favor of the off-leash law.The Englewood City Council will listen to public comment about this issue during its Monday night meeting.
