DENVER -- A severe snow storm hit Vail Pass Tuesday afternoon, causing road conditions and visibility to deteriorate very quickly and touching off numerous car crashes that led to the the closure of westbound Interstate 70 in that area, the Colorado State Patrol said.
Colorado State Patrol spokesman Don Moseman said that he believes the pileup involved at least 15 vehicles. including a bus, several semi tractor trailers and a CSP trooper vehicle.
The CSP car on the scene was rear-ended and totalled, but there was no one in the car at the time so the trooper was not hurt.
The crashes occurred around 5 p.m. between Mile Marker 184 and 188.
There are no reports at this time of any serious injuries.
There is no word yet on the effect on eastbound traffic. Until the
weather improves, the CSP has asked drivers to avoid the area.
