Former Rocky Staffers Start Another Online Venture

Site Includes Video, Journals

Several former staffers with the now-defunct Rocky Mountain News newspaper launched another online venture Monday.

The Rocky Mountain Independent lists 14 staffers. The about us page said, "We are focused on what’s missing in the coverage of Denver. We live in a beautiful, exciting, growing city where some of the best sports are played and some of the best art is produced. We are the center of the country politically and environmentally, home to vast resources of fossil fuels and vast resources of renewable energy, a state whose political landscape has changed dramatically in a matter of years. We see these things every day, these stories, they are a part of our lives as Coloradans. Yet so much of the news coverage here seems removed from the lives and the city we know. So what will we cover? Denver and the Rocky Mountains, and all that matters most to the people who live here."

The Web site said the staff hopes to produce a print edition, but the overhead associated with print is too much at this time.

The RockyMountainIndependent offers extra content for a price. One month for $4 or a one-year membership at half price, $24, for a limited time.

One editor, Steve Foster, wouldn't say how much owners have invested but said it's enough to get through three months as the group finalizes a business plan. Another editor, Cindy House, said the group will re-evaluate next steps after that.

The site is seeking advertisers.

Several people behind the Rocky Mountain Independent also worked on InDenverTimes, an online venture backed by three entrepreneurs who pulled back after the site missed subscription goals.

The Rocky Mountain News stopped publishing in February.
