Rapids Fireworks Show Cancelled After Technical Problems

Show Rescheduled For July 25th

An electrical malfunction stopped what was supposed to be one of the biggest fireworks displays in the state Saturday night.

An email sent to 7News from an upset viewer called the show a “total dud.” It went on to say “About 3 minutes of fireworks, messed up sound, no explanation…What a joke.”

William Mendez and his family had bought tickets to the Rapids game just for the fireworks.

"It was really unfortunate," he said, "to spend the money and nothing happened."

His nephew caught the show on his cell phone camera: a few minutes of fireworks followed by dark skies.

"I got pretty upset," said Jonathan Mendez. "They said it was going to be the biggest fireworks in all of Colorado."

Sunday afternoon, Commerce City officials said system-wide computer problems were to blame. The problems caused distortion of the music tracks and the crashing of the fireworks firing system.

"They were firing when we didn't expect them to fire... We decided pretty quickly that it was better to postpone the show than risk the safety of the crews working with the shells,” said Commerce City Mayor Paul Natale. “While about 80 percent of the fireworks did not go off, we will be working with the manufacturer to replace even the small number that did so everyone gets a complete experience.”

"As partners, the Rapids and Commerce City truly regret that we weren't able to provide the quality of fireworks show that our fans and our neighbors here deserve and have come to expect from us on Independence Day," said Jeff Plush, managing director of the Colorado Rapids.

A makeup date has been scheduled for July 25, 2009, immediately after the Rapids game against the New York Red Bulls. It’s anticipated the fireworks will begin around 9:30 p.m.

"We invite all Rapids fans and residents of Commerce City to rejoin us on July 25 and allow us to give them the kind of show that they deserve," Plush said.

Fans who had tickets to the July 4 game are asked to call the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park Guest Relations Hotline on Monday for details on attending the July 25 game. The phone number is 303-727-3748.
