NEDERLAND, Colo. -- A fisherman drowned in Barker Reservoir Thursday after he had jumped into the water to retrieve his fishing pole.Branden A. York, 22, of Aurora, was pronounced dead at the scene.Rescuers said York was fishing with three friends at about noon Thursday when he lost a part of his pole in the water. He jumped in after the pole but because of the frigid temperatures of the water, his muscles contracted and he couldn't swim, his friends said.
He yelled for help and one of the York's friend jumped in but he, too, had the same problem moving his muscles in the water. The friend was able to get out of the lake but York lost consciousness and went under, Boulder County Sheriff's Cmdr. Rick Brough said.Friends immediately called for help but it took the Boulder Emergency Squad Dive Team 74 minutes to get to him because of the drive to Nederland. The victim was found 30-plus feet down in the lake, where the water was 51 degrees, rescuers said.Rescuers said because of the temperature of the water, there is a chance a person could be at the bottom for 90 minutes and still survive. However, attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful.
